BOOKS, Books, and more books!!!

Max's grandma wrote us a poem about all of the books she read to us this year during our library time.  Each child brought home a copy in his/her Friday Folder.  We also voted for our favorite book that she read to us this year.  The children found it very difficult to choose just one book:)

We LOVED having Max's grandma read to us each week during our library time.  It was very special.  She had such great introductions to each story she read to the children.  Lively discussions were had by all!

Oceans Away!

Nina is as creative as EVER!!!  She made us a reading bag for our Ocean Unit!  She even added googly eyes and jewels to the fish and the children just LOVE the bag.  We also had a couple surprises inside the bag...The Pout-Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen and Ocean!.  We are reading, reading, reading:)  Such fun!  Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

FUN DAY is Monday afternoon!

Fun Day is a great day at Lakeside!  It is our version of a field day.  Classes travel through about 8 stations and I will lead our class through these stations.  If any of you would like to help me on Monday afternoon, please let me know or just show up!  We will begin right after lunch recess.  The last station usually finishes around 2:45.  There is a water balloon toss with the whole school after the last station.  Following that, the students all go to the field and the fire truck comes sprays the hose on them.

  • A few stations involve water (water balloons, waiter-waitress relays, wet sponge relays).  Children are allowed to wear their bathing suits under their clothes or a cover up if they would like to do so.
  • Please also keep in mind:
    • Shoes that can get wet but NO FLIP-FLOPS
    • Many children bring a beach towel
    • Girls should wear a one-piece suit with clothes on top or a cover up
    • Boys should wear a bathing suit with a t-shirt
    • Students should also have sunscreen applied before they come to school
    • Send a water bottle with your child’s name on it
Please let  me know if you have any questions!
Mrs. Grin

Can you believe it???

Please be sure to send your child's backpack with him/her each day this week.  We will be sending home things all week!  Also, please be sure your child has gym shoes for Friday's gym class.

Critter Barn ~ Wednesday, June 5th!!!

All Lakeside Kindergartners will head to the Critter Barn in Zeeland ALL day on Wednesday, June 5th.

We will be in and out of the barn all day. Be sure your child wears play clothes. Please, no dresses.

  • SHOES: closed-toe shoes with socks (sandals, flip flops, or clogs are NOT permitted).
  • SWEATSHIRT/JACKET: Dressing in layers is a good idea. It doesn't look like it's going to be very warm until the afternoon.
  • ALLERGIES: If your child has any kind of allergies (seasonal or animal), please be sure to give your child his/her allergy medication before the field trip.
  • SACK LUNCH: Students will need to bring a sack lunch AND a drink.
  • SNACK: Please send a snack with your child, as you normally do.
  • WATER BOTTLE: There are no drinking fountains, so you may want to also send a water bottle with your child’s name on it.
  • SUNSCREEN: Please apply sun screen to your child in the morning.

Please send your child's BOOSTER SEAT on June 5th!

We will dismiss at the end of the school day (3:25).

It is a great day! Your children will really have fun and learn a lot!

PTA Survey

Dear Parents,

Please take a minute to fill out this quick survey about the PTA at Lakeside Elementary. Our goal is for the PTA to best help you and your family have the most positive experiences at Lakeside. Our fundraisers, especially ROAR, have been crucial in helping teachers pay for field trips, technology, books and basic supplies that our schools cannot provide due to budget cuts and state funding cuts. Your time and feedback is GREATLY appreciated!

Find this google doc survey here:

Principal for the Day

One of our fourth graders was "Principal for the Day" today.  This honor was part of our ROAR auction and he won this opportunity to be the principal for the day.  He came to our classroom and read two stories to us and we really enjoyed them!  He even had on a snazzy tie like someone else we know!!!

Good-bye Miss Cindy!

We had to say good-bye to our cadet teacher from the high school on Friday.  The children made cards for her and we had a little good-bye party as well.  We will miss Miss Cindy and wish her all the best in college.

Chrome Books!

We enjoyed trying out the new Chrome Books this past Friday.  Each child was able to use his/her own Chrome Book and learned how to log-in.  We explored www.abcya.com and explored the many learning games found on this website.

We LOVE Books!

We enjoy listening to Max's grandma read to us each week in the Learning Commons.  This week, we listened to Yes Day! by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Tom Lichtenheld.  The children have lively discussions with her and she with them.  We are so fortunate that she volunteers her time each week to read to our class.  She also helps our school by reshelving all of the books that the children return to the library.

Poetry Party!

We have been reading many poetry books and enjoying learning about different kinds of poems.  Our Poetry Party is coming up next week and we hope you will be able to join us in our classroom on Thursday, May 23rd from 2:30-3:20.  Invitations will be coming home in your child's Friday Folder tomorrow.

Our Tadpole Visitor

We have been lucky enough to have a tadpole visit our classroom this week!  One of our friends found this tadpole near Reeds Lake and brought it in to share.  We are spending time observing this new friend as well! What fun!!!

We have been examining the tadpole and it's habitat with a flashlight and magnifying glasses.

How could I forget???

How could I have forgotten to post a picture of our wonderful worms!  The children have enjoyed observing, feeding, touching, and misting them every day!  We have used our magnifying glasses to get a good look at our wonderful worms as well as written some wonderful observations about them.

If you look very closely, you can see a large redworm in the center
of the picture.  There are 23 more hiding and burrowing in the soil!
